Who is eligible to live at 1237 West?
The building is available to DePaul University students, regardless of age or class standing. The building will also welcome students attending other Chicago-area universities. You will need a valid student identification number to reside at the building.
What is included in the rent?
Will my financial aid cover 1237 West’s housing charges?
1237 West’s charges can be covered by financial aid, just like on-campus housing. Any available financial aid funds, after university charges are satisfied, are released to the student for non-institutional expenses, such as off-campus housing. These funds can be used to pay charges at the building. We will work with the student and adjust payment dates according to disbursement of aid.
When can I move into 1237 West?
If you are a returning resident, you can either elect to extend your contract or enter into a new contract with us. If you are a new resident, we offer both academic term contract (September 6, 2008 –June 13, 2009) or calendar term contracts (September 6, 2008 – August22, 2009). In either case, you can move into the building beginning the first week of September, 2008. We will schedule a move-in date and time with you once you sign a Housing Agreement.
Will I have to share a bedroom?
All units offers single occupancy bedrooms, so there will only be one bed, wardrobe, desk and chair in each bedroom.
Are private bathrooms available?
Definitely. Select units offer this amenity.
Can I live with my friends?
Absolutely. The building offers two-, three- and four-person units. You can select your roommates, or we can help match you with other students. If you can fill an entire unit with friends, we will allow you to pick your location in the building (subject to availability).
Each unit is contracted by bedroom, rather than by unit. This means that you are only responsible for paying for yourself – not your roommates. Even if your roommates move out, you never have to pay housing charges for anyone but yourself.
Are the units furnished?
Yes. Every unit is filled with furnishings designed exclusively by [font color='#299ee0'][a href="http://www.hermanmiller.com/" target="_blank">Herman Miller[/a]. Residents will receive a furniture package containing:
Care of common area furnishings is the responsibility of all roommates. All of the furniture/furnishings placed in the unit at occupancy cannot be removed from either your unit or building. They may be moved between bedrooms within the same unit.

The building contains approximately 65 heated indoor spaces, which are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. MJH Education Assistance Illinois IV LLC (MJH) is the building owner. MJH was formed by the MJH Education and Healthcare Assistance Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation that exclusively supports DePaul University. Other entities formed by the foundation have assisted DePaul University in constructing and acquiring housing to support DePaul University students. MJH developed and operates 1237 West.
MJH's name-sake is Michael J. Horne who was born in Western Pennsylvania in 1939. He attended high school in Los Angeles and graduated from UCLA in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While taking post-graduate courses at UCLA in English Literature, he also served as a Teaching Assistant there.
In his short life, his talents and capabilities propelled his professional pursuits in a myriad of different directions. As a young man, his desire to change the world and love of humanity led him to pursue social work as a vocation. Later, unable to deny his artistic soul, his strong visual sense and technical expertise inspired him to express himself as a professional photographer. Eventually, his inclination toward business inherited from his family prompted a natural turn, which led to a successful career in real estate development.
On a personal level, he exuded warmth that few men possess. He was a man who loved opera and muscle cars with equal passion.
He possessed a charm and complexity that is often found in characters crafted by Chicago’s literary Nobel Laureate, Saul Bellow – “… an artist and intellectual and yet a businessman too; comfortable on the street, in the halls of academia and in the boardroom, too.” While at home in all those venues, Michael’s first love was English Literature.
Michael passed away in 1985 of a heart attack. At the time of his death, he had lived a full life but only begun to scrape the surface of his promise. While his sudden loss touched his many friends and family, none were as bereft as his fiancé and best friend, Eileen Dunne. The intensity of the relationship between them led Michael’s family to recognize that his memory would be honored well through support of Catholic educational institutions, as had the family of Eileen. Continuing that effort in Chicago where her family has been so active unites all of those interests.
